Yesterday I visited an antique store with a friend of mine, and was reminded of my love for old things.
I especially love old books.
There’s something charming about picking an old book off the shelf, opening it, and smelling that familiar scent of age. I love the rhythm of old words, and the way they transport me back in time.
Old things also make me think about the future.
They remind me that everything I hold today will someday be old.
They remind me that today becomes tomorrow–again and again.
They remind me to live. To put my trust not in the things that I hold, but in the One that holds that whole world in His hands.

How about you…Do you love old things too?
Mmm, yes. It’s a hard thing to balance the love of beauty and heritage that we associate with old things, while still delighting in what is now. But old books will never stop being delightful. ;)
Yes, Krystiana, I know what you mean. It’s a difficult balance indeed!
Here’s to old books! :)
I found it interesting that you wrote about going to the antique store and your love for old things because this week I also went to an antique store. My grandmother came to visit and we wandered around a beautiful antique store with her one day. The items were so old and beautiful.
You mentioned that, “Old things also make me think about the future. They remind me that everything I hold today will someday be old.” I smiled when I read this because I was recently thinking the same thing. As I was recording a day’s events in my journal, the thought struck me that one day my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, who knows how many generations might read my writings. When I thought about this, it made me want to write more details of my life, more thoughts and feelings, things that would encourage and bless others, who knows how many years down the road.
I am reminded of Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
May our lives and everything we do be a shining light and leave a good testimony, an inspiring history for all those who come behind us.
Thank you for your beautiful comment, Sarah. :)
I thought it was so funny when I heard you mention the antique shop, because it’s been years since I’ve been to one, but yesterday my friend suggested we go to one near the mall where we were. It was a neat experience, and also we were with our moms and they recognized things from their childhood. As I brainstormed about what to post today, I found a draft that I’d started a while ago about how I love old things, and thought that would be a fitting post for the occasion. :)
That is so wonderful that you are thinking of your future children and grandchildren as you write in your journal. I’ve thought of that before too…Each of us is leaving a legacy. You said that so beautifully. <3
Old things remind me of my childhood (haha) and bring back good memories of when times were simpler….
That is beautiful, Miss Nancy! :)
