Simple Seamless Baby Hats

Here is another quick and easy pattern that is great for using up stash yarn. The pattern is the same for all sizes, you simply change your gauge to make sizes preemie, newborn, and baby. You can also knit these hats to go along with my other pattern Simple Seamless Baby Booties .

Skill Level: easy
Stitches Used: cast on, knit, k2t
Abbreviations: knit (k), knit two together (k2t), stitches (sts)
Sizes: preemie (newborn, baby), measures: 12″ (13″, 14″) circumference, and 5 1/2″ (6 1/2″ / 7″)  length without brim folded
Note: Make sure you check your gauge. The size of the hats are determined by the gauge you use.

Gauge:
preemie: 4 sts = 1″
newborn: 3 1/2 sts = 1″
baby: 3 sts = 1″

-Materials-

  • set of five double pointed knitting needles in size needed to obtain gauge . ( I used size 8 needles for  a preemie hat, size 9 needles for a newborn hat, and size 10 1/2 needles for a baby hat)
  • yarn suitable for gauge (I used about 34 yds of worsted weight yarn for a preemie hat, 40 yds of heavy worsted weight yarn for a newborn hat, and 47 yds of bulky weight yarn for a baby hat)

-Hat-

  • With needle size and yarn needed to obtain gauge, cast on 44 stitches. Divide stitches onto 4 double pointed needles. (11 sts per needle)

Rows 1-24: join in round, knit.  [the hat should measure  about 4 1/2″ (5 1/2″, 6 “) long]
Row 25: *k2, k2t,* repeat to end of round. (33 sts)
Row 26: knit.
Row 27: *k1, k2t,* repeat to end of round. (21 sts)
Row 28: knit.
Row 29: *k2t,* to end of round.  (11 sts)

  • Cut yarn, weave through remaining stitches 3 times, fasten off. Weave in ends. Fold up brim as desired.

  1. I have a question the hat pictured is smooth, do i have to purl at all? I’m just learning and have never knitted with double pointed needles, so I’m not sure how it works. Thanks

  2. Brilliant and simple pattern which enabled me to run up one of these gorgeous hats for my friend’s little boy when he made a sooner-than-expected appearance last week. Thank you!

  3. Hello Joy
Thank you for this seamless pattern. I will be making these hat for a Canadian charity, Health Partners Canada, that help children all over the world. They have a preemie seamless hat pattern on their website but their baby hat has a seam. I prefer no seams on baby hats – so thank you for your lovely creation! Sending blessings your way. Mia

    1. Hi, Penny. :)

The reason double pointed needles are used is since the hat size is so small that regular circular needles may be too long. You could knit the hat on regular needles and then sew it together, but you would need to alternate knitting one row and purling the next row in order to achieve the stockinette stitch look. I hope this is helpful, and please let me know if you have any more questions.

      Happy Knitting!

  4. I’m not good at modifying a pattern, but I would love to knit this for a toddler size (12-18 mos. ) Any suggestions as to needle size, circumference, etc.?

    1. Hi Sheri,
Thanks for commenting. :) This pattern is unique in that it’s the same pattern for every size, except thicker or thinner yarn is used to change the size. My suggestion is that perhaps altering another hat pattern would be easier. Here is a basic knit hat pattern for a toddler: https://wallabyknits.blogspot.com/2011/09/basic-toddler-hat.html

If you want the rolled up edges like in this pattern, skip the ribbing at the beginning of the hat and simply knit every row. I hope this is helpful for you! :)

      Happy knitting!
